Declining water level at Hub dam adds to Karachi’s water woes

Hub dam

KARACHI: Water level at the Hub dam has dropped to a dangerous point, triggering a sever water shortage in several areas of the metropolis already heavily deficient in water.

Denizens inhabiting the areas falling within the jurisdiction of district central have been hit hard by water scarcity.

There doesn’t seem any measures on the part of water utility to tackle the water crisis and ensure supply of water to citizens running from pillar to post in search of water.

Water in the dam located 56 km from the city has declined to a low level owing to the lack of run-off in recent months.

Most parts of the country faces drought-like situation as last year’s monsoon was about a quarter below the norm and winter rains were about half the average.

The Hub dam is extended to 24,300 acres with gross storage capacity of 857000 acre feet. It is the Pakistan’s third largest dam and an important source that meets water needs of the city.
