Medical student shot dead in Kohat revealed name of her killer

PESHAWAR: A medical student who was shot dead for refusing a marriage proposal is known to have revealed the alleged killer’s name to her brother moments before her death.

Asma Rani was a third year student at the Abbottabad Medical College, and was in her hometown Kohat on vacations. She was returning in a rickshaw with her sister-in-law when the suspect Mujahid who was already present outside their house shot her dead.

Asma received three bullet wounds and was shifted to hospital in critical condition but died from her wounds. The suspect fled after the incident.

However, Asma revealed the name of the suspect before she succumbed to her injuries. She said that his name was Mujahid Afridi and he was the nephew of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf district vice-president Aftab Alam.

Asma revealed the name of her killer three times before being shot dead, accusing him repeatedly of being the killer. Asma had reportedly rejected a marriage proposal by Afridi, which enraged him and he shot her dead.

Police have lodged a case against Afridi, but have been unable to arrest him despite the passage of two days. It has been rumoured that the suspect has fled the country.

A joint resolution by female parliamentarians has been submitted in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly condemning the killing of the medical student. The resolution condemns the barbaric killing and calls for the immediate arrest of the culprit.

The alleged killer Mujhaidullah Afridi is the nephew of PTI district Vice-President Aftab Alam.

KP Police is independent, should not give political tone: Aftab Alam

However, PTI leader Aftab Alam has sympathised with the victim’s family and strongly condemned the killing. He said the KP police is free and independent, and that the incident should not be given a political tone.

“KP police is independent and is taking action. We are fully cooperating with them. This incident should not be given any political tone. I am sure that the victim will receive justice,” he said.

Inspector General KP Salahuddin Mehsud said the case is being fully investigated and the victim was allegedly killed by Mujahid Afridi and his brother. He said that a committee comparison DPO Kohat, SP Invetigation and other officials has been formed to investigate the incident.

Speaking to ARY News, he said that the Mujahid had reportedly left for Islamabad on the night of the incident, and then boarded a flight to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah. He said that the they contacted the FIA to arrest the police with assistance of the Interpol.

Furthermore, he said efforts are underway to arrest the suspect’s brother named Sadiq, adding the their relatives are questioned and their homes are being searched in Kohat. He expressed confidence that both the suspects will be arrested and brought to justice.
