Nawaz condemns as NAB arrests PML-N leader Qamarul Islam

ISLAMABAD/LONDON: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Monday arrested a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Raja Qamarul Islam for an inquiry pertaining to Saaf Pani Company scam, ARY News reported.

Qamarul Islam was set to contest polls against estranged party leader Chaudhry Nisar from NA-59 Rawalpindi and PP-10.

Raja got record number of votes in Punjab during 2013 election on the provincial assembly seat from the same area.

Along with Qamarul Islam, the anti-graft authority also arrested former secretary P&D Punjab Waseem Ajmal Chaudhry in the case. Chaudhry had also served as chief executive officer (CEO) of Saaf Pani Company in the past.

PML-N’s lifelong leader Nawaz Sharif, who is in London, expressed sorrow over Qamarul Islam’s arrest and said that his party is getting more information to tackle the issue.

“This is sad… however, we are getting more information and will see what we can do,” Nawaz told reporters outside a London hospital where he is attending his ailing wife Kulsoom Nawaz.

Demographic gap widens between eastern and western Europe

Online betting firms gamble on soccer-mad Nigeria

Nigeria

LAGOS: Online sports betting is booming in soccer-mad Nigeria largely thanks to payment systems developed by homegrown technology firms that are starting to make online businesses more viable.

For years, mobile payments failed to take off in Nigeria as they have in countries such as Kenya, where Safaricom’s M-Pesa money transfers have fostered a culture of cashless payments.

Fear of electronic fraud and slow internet speeds have held Nigerian online consumers back but betting firms says the new, fast digital payment systems underpinning their websites are changing attitudes towards online transactions.

“We have seen significant growth in the number of payment solutions that are available. All that is definitely changing the gaming space,” said Seun Anibaba, CEO of Lagos State Lotteries Board, gaming regulator in Nigeria’s commercial capital.

“The operators will go with whoever is faster, whoever can connect to their platform with less issues and glitches,” he said, adding that taxes from sports betting in Lagos State rose 30 percent to 40 percent in 2017 from 2016.

That growth has been matched by a rise in web payments, according to data from the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), which is owned by the central bank and licensed banks.

In 2016, there were 14 million web payments worth a total 132 billion naira ($420 million). Transactions leapt to 29 million worth 185 billion in 2017 and in the first quarter of 2018 there were nearly 10 million worth 61 billion.

With a young population of nearly 190 million, rising mobile phone use and falling data costs, Nigeria has long been seen as a great opportunity for online businesses – once consumers feel comfortable with electronic payments.

Online gambling firms say that is happening, though reaching the tens of millions of Nigerians without access to banking services remains a challenge for pure online retailers.

British online betting firm Betway opened its first African business in Kenya in 2015, followed by Uganda, Ghana and South Africa. It launched in Nigeria in January.

“There is a gradual shift to online now, that is where the industry is going,” Betway’s Nigeria manager Lere Awokoya said.

“The growth in the number of fintechs, and the government as an enabler, has helped the business to thrive. These technological shifts encouraged Betway to start operating in Nigeria,” he said.

FINTECH COMPETITION

Betting firms cashing in on the soccer frenzy whipped up by Nigeria’s participation in the World Cup say they are finding the payment systems created by local startups such as Paystack are proving popular online.

Paystack and another local startup Flutterwave, both founded in 2016, are providing competition for Nigeria’s Interswitch which was set up in 2002 and was the main platform used by businesses operating in Nigeria.

“We added Paystack as one of our payment options without any fanfare, without announcing to our customers, and within a month it shot up to the number one most used payment option on the website,” said Akin Alabi, founder of NairabBET.

He said NairaBET, the country’s second biggest betting firm, now had 2 million regular customers on its website, up from 500,000 in 2013, and Paystack remained the most popular payment option since it was added in late 2017.

Paystack was set up by two Nigerian computer science graduates, Shola Akinlade and Ezra Olubi, who received early stage funding in Silicon Valley’s Y-Combinator programme.

In December 2016, it raised $1.3 million from investors including China’s Tencent and Comcast Ventures in the United States.

Paystack, based in the frenetic Ikeja district of Lagos, said the number of monthly transactions it processed rose from about 8,000 in early 2016 to more than 900,000 as of June 2018.

“In early 2016 we were processing about $3,000 a month. Today we process well over $11 million every single month,” said Emmanuel Quartey, Paystack’s head of growth.

He said an ecosystem of developers had emerged around Paystack, creating software to integrate the platform into websites. “We have seen a growth in that community and they have carried us along,” said Quartey.

Paystack said it enables payments for a number of betting firms but also a wide range of businesses, from utility services to transport companies to insurer Axa Mansard.

Flutterwave, co-founded by Nigerian entrepreneur Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, is also backed by the Y-Combinator programme as well as venture capitalists Greycroft Partners and Green Visor Capital and the Omidyar Network. It raised $10 million last year.

FOREIGN INVESTMENT

Shifts in Nigeria’s payment culture have coincided with the arrival of foreign investors hoping to tap into sports betting.

Industry experts say the sector generates about $1 billion a year and is likely to grow faster than in South Africa and Kenya where the business is more developed.

Russia’s 1XBet and Slovakia’s DOXXbet have both set up in Nigeria in the last two years while Italy’s Goldbet was ahead of the trend, taking a 50 percent stake in market leader Bet9ja when the Nigerian firm launched in 2015.

NairaBET’s Alabi said its sales were split between shops and online but the ease of electronic payments, cost of running shops and ability for customers to avoid the stigma of gambling in public meant online transactions would grow.

But despite advances in digital payments, Kunle Soname – chairman and co-founder of Bet9ja – said it was important to have a shop network, not least because many customers still remain reluctant to spend online.

He said the company, with about 60 percent of Nigeria’s sports betting market, had an extensive network. Nigerian betting shops often act as social hubs where customers can watch soccer free of charge while placing bets.

At a BetKing hall deep inside the bustling Oshodi market in Lagos, dozens of soccer fans gathered to watch Nigeria’s final warm up game before the World Cup.

Richard Onuka, a factory worker who earns 25,000 naira a month, was fixated on a TV screen inside. He said he started gambling three months ago and bets up to 1,000 naira a day.

“Since I have been playing I have not won anything but I believe that one day I will win,” said Onuka.

Saudi Arabia stuns Egypt 2-1 in World Cup farewell despite Salah strike

Saudi

VOLGOGRAD: Saudi Arabia managed their first win at the 2018 World Cup by beating Egypt 2-1 with a last-gasp winner that eclipsed Egyptian talisman Mohamed Salah’s 22nd minute goal in Monday’s Group A game between the two eliminated teams.

Saudi Arabia finished third in the group standings, scoring their only goals of the tournament and vastly improving from the 5-0 thrashing by hosts Russia in their opening game.

It was a bitter disappointment for the Egyptian side, however, with Liverpool striker Salah unable to prevent three consecutive defeats for his country. Egyptian keeper Essam El-Hadary became the oldest player ever to appear at a World Cup at 45-years-old.

Saudi Arabia got back in the game with a penalty awarded just before halftime and Salman Al-Faraj scored from the spot. They then pulled off a win in the 95th minute thanks to Salem Al-Dawsari’s angled shot.

We’ve changed, Uber says, in court battle to keep license

uber

LONDON: Uber accepted it had made mistakes but said it had changed as it went to court on Monday to overturn a decision stripping it of its license in London after it was ruled unfit to run a taxi service in its most important European market.

Regulator Transport for London (TfL) shocked the Silicon Valley firm last September by refusing to renew its license, citing failings in its approach to reporting serious criminal offences and to background checks on drivers.

Its chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi, who took charge the month before TfL’s decision, has pledged to “make things right” in London, and the court case is a test of how far Uber can demonstrate it has changed.

While the appeal process is ongoing, Uber can continue to operate in the city.

The firm has introduced several new initiatives in London since losing its license, including 24/7 telephone support and the proactive reporting of serious incidents to the city’s police. It has also changed senior management.

Uber’s lawyer Thomas de la Mare said the company accepted the September ruling and the focus of the appeal should be on its reforms.

“It’s no part of our case to say it was wrong. We accept it was right,” de la Mare told Westminster Magistrates Court in London. “It’s that acceptance that has led to wholesale change in the way that we conduct our business.”

The appeal is due to be heard over three days and will hear from witnesses including Uber’s UK Chairman Laurel Powers-Freeling, UK Head of Cities Fred Jones and TfL’s Interim Director of Licensing Helen Chapman.

‘LACK OF UNDERSTANDING’

Uber UK’s General Manager Tom Elvidge admitted the company’s correspondence with TfL had at times been inaccurate, incomplete and inadequate across a range of issues.

He said inaccuracies in letters sent in 2014 about whether Uber’s business model was legal under London’s regulatory framework stemmed from a “lack of understanding” on Uber’s part, but that new people as well as the new policies would help to avoid a repeat of the problems in future.

“It was very clear to ULL (Uber London Limited) that a change in structure, a change in leadership, and a fundamental change in the way we were managing and governing operations was essential,” he told the court.

In May, Uber appointed a new boss for Northern and Eastern Europe, which includes Britain, after its previous head Jo Bertram quit last year following the decision to strip Uber of its London license.

After its application for a five-year license was rejected last year, Uber is now seeking an 18-month one to prove to the authorities that it has reformed.

Judge Emma Arbuthnot may take weeks before making her decision, which is likely to be subject to further appeal by the losing side, meaning the whole legal process could take years.

However, she signaled any renewal of the license could be for a shorter period.

“I would’ve thought, if I were to renew the license, 18 months would be rather too long,” she said.

At stake for the U.S. firm is one of its most crucial foreign markets. Of its over 60,000 drivers in Britain, about 45,000 are in London.

Since September’s TfL decision, Uber has also been stripped of its license by the southern coastal city of Brighton, in a decision which it is appealing, and the northern city of York.

It has, however, gained new licenses in Sheffield, Cambridge, Nottingham and Leicester.

Paine casts doubt on ODI future after whitewash

Paine

Australia captain Tim Paine has cast doubt over his one-day international future after his touring side were thumped 5-0 by England, who sealed the series whitewash with a one-wicket victory in Manchester on Sunday.

The 33-year-old Paine, Australia’s test captain, was handed the role for the one-day portion of their limited-overs tour of England but chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said at the time it was probably only a stop-gap measure.

The wicketkeeper, leading the side while regular captain Steve Smith serves a 12-month ban following a ball-tampering scandal, scored just 36 runs in the series as England outclassed the World Cup holders with their powerful batting lineup.

Fellow wicketkeeper Alex Carey played the final two games in Durham and at Old Trafford, but only as a batsman, and has been appointed vice-captain for the sole Twenty20 match against England on June 27 and their T20 tour of Zimbabwe in July.

Aaron Finch is Australia’s T20 captain.

“All I know is I was coming here to do this series and I’ve said a few times before, when you are my age it’s a bit foolish to look ahead,” Paine told Cricket Australia’s website.

“Certainly, I am really looking forward to captaining the test team and continuing how I have been playing in that format.

“But where I go with the rest of my cricket is something we will discuss in the coming weeks.”

Paine was thrust into the test captaincy role after Australian cricket was rocked by the ball-tampering incident in South Africa in March, creating a leadership vacuum with both Smith and his deputy David Warner handed one-year suspensions.

WORLD CUP PROSPECTS

He was then also surprisingly given the captaincy for the series in England, with Finch given the vice-captaincy.

Paine, however, said his struggles with the bat in England had been tough.

“Its been difficult, you play cricket to do well and this series I haven’t done that,” Paine, whose highest score in the series was 15, added. “I haven’t played anywhere near as well as I would have liked to.

“That happens and it’s certainly not through a lack of effort, I am trying my guts out and working really hard, I have just had one of those series.

“I started off poorly and couldn’t get it back on track.”

Despite the series defeat, Paine believes it is too early to write off Australia’s chances at next year’s World Cup being hosted by England and Wales.

“We’ve got a number of players who weren’t in this squad who have played in and won World Cups. They know what it takes,” Paine added.

“Cricket Australia as an organisation knows what it takes and whilst I’ve heard a few times this team looks like it hasn’t got a plan or doesn’t know where it’s going, we’ve got a clear direction, we know where we’re going.”

As well as their suspended skipper and vice-captain, Australia were also without injured fast bowlers Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood for the series, with the trio expected to thrive in English conditions next year.

Amid Arab boycott, Qatar’s new friends find rich openings

Qatar

DOHA: Six months ago Serkan Ucar arrived in Doha to scope out business opportunities – away from his usual patch. The mission looks set to pay off handsomely, as the Turkish entrepreneur expects to win a first contract to help build an iconic 2022 World Cup stadium.

Since several Arab countries launched an economic boycott of Qatar a year ago, the tiny Gulf state has had to find alternative partners for trade and investment. Aided by its massive natural gas wealth, it has rapidly made new friends.

A year ago Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt cut transport and trade links with Doha, accusing it of backing terrorism – a charge it strongly denies.

The boycott disrupted Qatar’s shipping routes through the Gulf and blocked imports across its only land border with Saudi Arabia, previously the route for its perishable food supplies and construction materials.

In the bitter diplomatic and economic chill, Ankara sided with Qatar. Ucar, 28, saw openings.

“They’ve been extremely welcoming for Turkish companies after the blockade,” Ucar told Reuters at a hotel where he was about to interview engineers for jobs at his new office in Doha.

His family business Referans Holding expects to sign a contract soon to supply scaffolding and aluminium and fit out Lusail Stadium, where the 2022 World Cup final will take place.

Many Turkish contractors are bidding for projects as Qatar pushes ahead with infrastructure for the tournament, said Joseph Abraham, chief executive of Commercial Bank of Qatar.

WORLD CUP BOOM

Huge construction projects are under way for the World Cup. Seven new stadiums are being built, along with other infrastructure, sucking in building materials from far afield.

Gypsum, used to make drywall, is being newly imported from Iran, said a construction manager who declined to be named. Gabbro, used to make asphalt and concrete, was now being imported from Oman instead of the UAE.

While the World Cup means sporting drama and global prestige, the early stages of the boycott were all about urgent shortages of basic products.

When dairy, fresh milk and eggs disappeared from stores, Doha airlifted in more than 3,000 cows on state airline Qatar Airways and imported eggs from Oman, which kept its shipping route with Qatar open when Dubai halted shipments to Doha.

In Qatar’s supermarkets, Turkish brands like Ülker and Pinar soft cream cheeses are doing well.

“The Turkish market is very important to us,” said Saleh bin Hamad al-Sharqi, director general at the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “It’s geographically close logistically, high quality and has competitive prices.”

Imports from Turkey between June and December 2017 grew to $523 million, 48.2 percent higher than in the same period the previous year. From Oman they jumped 150 percent to $575 million, according to International Monetary Fund data.

Imports from India rose 54.6 percent to $1.06 billion, and from Iran 63 percent to $69 million.

WEATHERING THE STORM

Some of Doha’s businesses took a battering when the boycott was launched. Qatar Airways lost money in 2017 after losing access to airspace over boycotting states.

Yet the economy has weathered the protracted dispute and is expected to grow 2.6 percent this year and closer to 3 percent in 2019, according to the finance ministry.

The world’s largest liquefied natural gas exporter quickly deployed its massive sovereign wealth fund, estimated to have about $320 billion (241.7 billion pounds) of assets, to protect its banks and currency after the boycotting states withdrew deposits.

“Our biggest mission as Qataris during the blockade was to maintain the economy,” Yousuf Al Jaida, chief executive of the Qatar Financial Centre, told Reuters.

“A lot of focus was not about growth, it was about physically withstanding the blockade and whatever damage that may occur, because essentials, whether it’s food or logistics, were not being made available.”

Qatari officials say the crisis was a wake-up call for the country of 2.7 million to become more self-reliant and diversify.

“We want the world to see what this relatively small country can do with resilience and commitment,” Energy Minister Mohammed al-Sada told Reuters. “The only worry I have is that our team may not win the (2022) World Cup.”

US says still working to reunite 2,053 children with families

children

WASHINGTON: The US government still has 2,053 children in its custody who were separated from their parents under President Donald Trump’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy and officials said there was a “well coordinated” process for reuniting families.

The Department of Homeland Security issued a fact sheet late on Saturday in the face of criticism from lawyers for parents and children who have said they have seen little evidence of an organized system.

A total of 522 children in the custody of US border officials have already been reunited with parents, according to the fact sheet, which was published three days after Trump ended his policy of separating families on the US-Mexico border.

Trump’s shift came after images of youngsters in cages triggered outrage at home and abroad.

On Sunday, Trump renewed his hardline on immigration calling for people who enter the United States illegally to be sent back to where they came from immediately without any judicial process.

An administration official said on Sunday 522 children were able to be reunited because their parents came back from court proceedings quickly enough that the children had not yet been transferred to the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services, where the more than 2,000 children who remain separated from their parents are now.

“The United States government knows the location of all children in its custody and is working to reunite them with their families,” the DHS fact sheet said.

The new details came after more than two months of confusion how detained migrant parents, who are shuttled from facility to facility run by different government agencies, would ever reunite with their children, who are sent to shelters and foster homes scattered across the country.

The DHS said the Trump administration has a process for how parents would be reunited with their children “for the purposes of removal,” or deportation.

Deportation proceedings could take months to complete, and the fact sheet did not say whether parents and children would be reunited in the intervening time.

PHONE CALLS

The Port Isabel detention center in Texas will serve as “the primary family reunification and removal center” for adults in ICE custody, the statement said.

Many of the parents are planning to claim asylum, lawyers and advocates who have spoken with them said. The fact sheet did not say how reunifications would be handled in those cases.

The fact sheet said children are given the chance to speak with a “vetted parent, guardian or relative” within 24 hours of arriving at a facility run by Department of Health and Human Services.

Sirine Shebaya, a senior staff attorney with Muslim Advocates, said she and two other lawyers met about 70 detained Central American migrants at Port Isabel on Friday and Saturday. All but one had been separated from their children, she added in an interview before the fact sheet was published.

Several of the migrants had been given a number to call to try to locate their children, but found their calls would not go through or no one picked up, she said. If they did manage to get someone on the line, they were often told they would get a call back – useless to them while in a detention center.

“When they do get a phone call, it’s a one- to two-minute phone call and the kids frequently don’t know where they are,” she said. “Some kids know, ‘OK I’m in Michigan,’ but they don’t know any more than that.”
